is within a mile of Lake Lure and just 25 miles from Asheville, North Carolina. The village is situated in the heart of Hickory Nut Gorge, a natural gap through the southern Appalachian Mountains that contains
unique geographical formations such as the rock itself as well as many rare plants and animals. The village is about 3 miles long and connects with the town limits of Lake Lure. The charmingly bold Rocky Broad River flows along side of the village hugging the mountains and winding road, and is the main water source for Lake Lure.
The little village has quaint shops offering antiques, pottery, and crafts plus locally owned restaurants, many with outside dining overlooking the river. Family owned businesses range from an outfitter to a general store to a variety of gift shops. Most of the buildings downtown date back to the 1920s. The village became a resort town and tourist attraction around Chimney Rock Park, which began to be developed in 1902. There is a riverwalk that follows the river with picnic areas all along. Activities such as trout fishing, canoeing, and kayaking are enjoyed throughout the area.
Chimney Rock State Park, one of NC’s newest state parks, is in the center of Chimney Rock. Privately owned until it was purchased by the state of North Carolina in 2007, the state park has hiking trails, dramatic waterfalls and gorgeous views of the gorge and Lake Lure. The 315 foot rock majestically rules over the town and offers 75 mile views of breath taking western NC. Hiking trails in the park lead to the 404 ft. Hickory Nut Falls, one of the most dramatic waterfalls in Western NC. The elevation of the park ranges from 1,100 feet to 2,800 feet and the park is expanding to include some 5000 acres.
